Summer and Thermal Expansion: When Pipe Support Systems Make the Difference

As temperatures rise during the summer months, piping systems are exposed to increasingly demanding operating conditions. Among the key factors to consider during the design and installation phase is thermal expansion—a natural physical phenomenon which, if not properly managed, can lead to unwanted stresses, deformation and excessive loads throughout the system.

Every material has its own coefficient of thermal expansion. For carbon steel, the linear thermal expansion coefficient is approximately 12 × 10⁻⁶ m/m·K. Although this value may appear insignificant, over long pipe runs it can result in dimensional changes measuring several centimetres.

For example, a 30-metre steel pipeline subjected to a 50°C temperature variation can expand by approximately 18 mm. While this movement may seem negligible, if it is not properly accommodated it can generate significant mechanical stresses on anchor points, connected equipment and the entire support system.

This is where the pipe support system plays a crucial role.

A properly engineered design must clearly distinguish between fixed points, which restrain the pipeline at specific locations, and guides or sliding supports, which allow controlled longitudinal movement as the pipe expands and contracts. Their location, together with the spacing between supports, must be determined according to the operating conditions, service temperatures, applied loads and the characteristics of the materials involved.

One of the most common design mistakes is to over-constrain a pipeline by installing anchor points along its entire length. When this happens, the pipeline is prevented from expanding naturally and the resulting stresses are transferred directly to the system's most vulnerable components, such as flanges, valves, equipment connections, expansion joints and welded joints, increasing the risk of deformation, leakage and premature failure.

Proper pipe support design is therefore not about preventing movement, but about controlling it. The objective is not to stop thermal expansion—an unavoidable physical phenomenon—but to ensure that it occurs where intended by design, preserving the integrity of the installation while reducing stresses and improving the overall safety, reliability and service life of the system.

For this reason, pipe support systems should never be regarded as simple accessories. They are an integral part of the engineering design, directly influencing the performance and long-term reliability of the entire installation.
